Every once in a while it's nice to be reminded that Vivaldi wrote something other than scads of sound-alike concertos. (Oops, are my biases showing?) This is a lovely collection of his motets for soprano and strings, performed beautifully by the dusky-voiced Patrizia Ciofi, accoompanied by the always-reliable Europa Galante playing on period instruments under the direction of violinist Fabio Biondi. This appears to be the only currently in-print edition of Ernest Chausson's operatic setting of the King Arthur legend, and it's nicely done if a bit haphazardly recorded -- at times the soloists sound distractingly far away from the microphone. But the orchestra sounds fantastic and the performances themselves are very good. If your library already owns the Vienna Symphony's 1999 recording (Koch Schwann 365 422) then there's probably no need to duplicate, but this one will work just fine if you need to fill the hole in your collection. Felix Mendelssohn wrote his first piano concerto (for two pianos and orchestra) at age 14, but was dissatisfied with it and never allowed it to be published. It was first commercially published in 1960; however, recent scholarship has revealed that the composer wrote a drastically revised first movement in 1829, and the concerto is recorded here for the first time with both the original and revised versions of that movement. The makeweight piece here is an almost equally delightful (and rarely recorded) work by Johann Baptist Cramer; the performance by Del Parkinson and Jeffrey Shumway (who record as the American Piano Duo) and Brigham Young University's fine Philharmonic Orchestra, is exceptionally good, as is the recording quality. In the late 1960s and 1970s Frederick Rzewski wrote in something of a minimalist style; his more recent works are more harmonically expansive and (dare one say it) romantic. This excellent recording by the young chamber ensemble Eighth Blackbird includes the six-movement Pocket Symphony (written for them in 2000) as well as two earlier works: Les Moutons de Panurge (1969) and a new arrangement of Coming Together. This varied program consists of several choral and orchestral works that predate Arnold Schoenberg's full development of the atonal, twelve-tone system for which he is infamous. In fact, works like Freide auf Erden and the three folksong settings may surprise those who think they know what Schoenberg sounds like. Then the opus 9 chamber symphony (still tonal, but distinctly spiky) kicks in, and you remember why the Schoenberg name gives you that slightly nervous feeling in the stomach. Recommended. (RA) |

This unjustly neglected opera was one of three written by Gluck as part of a sort of "reform" project with librettist Raniero de'Calzabigi; the idea was that the music should be subordinated to the words, not vice versa. Despite the "eat your peas" tone of the manifesto that accompanied the published work, Paride ed Elena is a completely charming opera, not world-changing but elegant and filled with beautiful arias. The top-notch performers on this recording do it full justice. Highly recommended to all classical collections. (RA) |

Unfortunately, the performances on this disc leave something to be desired; the choir sounds great and the recording quality is good, but the soloists are almost uniformly weak. Oddly enough, this is the first reissue of Tommy Collins released in the states. In the 1950s, Collins (along with Wynn Stewart) was an early and important influence on the Bakersfield country scene; in fact, Buck Owens recorded an entire album of his songs and Merle Haggard cut a number of them as well. Like Jimmy Dickens, Collins is known as a novelty singer, but (as with Dickens) it is his heartfelt honky tonk ballads that will stay with you. (SM) |

The Grascals are probably best known as Dolly Parton's backup band, but they have a tight, fast-paced bluegrass style that is all their own and hard to ignore. Dolly joins them on Elvis Presley's formerly cheesy "Viva Las Vegas" which they transform into a really exciting version. ‘Round About Midnight represents a major step in Davis’ career. The man who invented ambient music has not made a record of pop music with vocals under his own name since 1977 (!), and it's surprising how unsurprising the music here is. Another Day on Earth is pretty much what a fan might expect Eno to sound like now -- still not a strong singer but better able to compensate for that with studio wizardry, and perhaps a little gentler in approach since last we heard from him, as befits a man who just turned 57 (!!). It's a great idea -- take classic soul hits from the 1960s and 1970s and hand them over to some of the best modern producers and DJs for remix treatment. The reality doesn't quite live up to the potential (Salaam Remi's mix of the Jackson 5's "ABC" is especially disappointing), but there are some very fun moments here. And since this disc consists entirely of remixes of very familiar songs, it will serve as a good illustration to the uninitiated (if there are any uninitiated left) of how the whole remix concept works. In the mid-1950s, Meteor Records was Sun Records' only rival in Memphis when it came to local talent. Today, celebrities appear on talk shows wearing Sun t-shirts, while Meteor Records is talked about primarily by maladjusted rockabilly fiends and record collectors. So it goes. This Ace twofer is the first compilation of every Meteor release in the country and rockabilly genres, and although hopelessly obscure to all but collectors, much of it is top-notch. Rockers was, after The Harder They Come, the most important reggae-oriented film of the 1970s, and since it was much more explicitly reggae-oriented it's arguably even more important from a musicological standpoint. One of Britain’s finest reggae bands, Steel Pulse kept their politics keenly in focus as they mixed Jamaican reggae rhythms with hints of early 80’s Brit pop. As a result, they became a huge success in the UK and beyond. 1982’s True Democracy, their fourth album, is perhaps their most successful effort—the politics are sharp, the performance polished, and the production is excellent. Rhino’s remastered reissue includes four extra dub and 12” club singles. Rhino has simultaneously reissued a similarly expanded version of 1984’s Earth Crisis, and while it’s not quite as compelling as True Democracy, both would make worthy additions to any reggae collection (GH). |
