To some it might seem strange that the Bard of Bakersfield would do an album of standards, but Merle Haggard has always been the jazziest of the major country singers, with a special affinity for Bob Wills’ Texas swing mixed in with his hardcore honky-tonk. This album continues the late career renaissance Haggard started when he left the major labels in 2000 for If Only I Could Fly (Epitaph), and, though he may be back with his original label, EMI/Capitol, for Unforgettable, he’s still doing things his own way. The Telluride Bluegrass Festival stopped being primarily about bluegrass music years ago, and that fact is reflected on this collection of performances from the festival's 30th-anniversary year, which includes everything from acid-grass standards ("Molly and Tenbrooks," "Cluck Old Hen") to an ill-advised Beatles cover (thanks a lot, Nickel Creek) and the inevitable appearance by the always-insufferable John Cowan, on what is perhaps the most ill-advised moment of all: a terrible acoustic-rock version of "Unchained Melody." Oy. There are some nice moments here (including a surprisingly great version of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" by the String Cheese Incident), but they're unfortunately outweighed by the cringe-inducing ones. When New Order returned from a long hiatus with 2001’s Get Ready they were clearly not quite ready, but now Waiting for the Sirens’ Call proves that a band can regain full command of its powers years after its commercial peak. The band may have pioneered dance-rock in the 80s, but they seem to have come down firmly on the rock side of the equation here in the 00s. The Subharmonic label has been one of several homes to the famously profilic and peripatetic producer/bassist Bill Laswell over the last ten years or so, and he has helped midwife some of the label's strangest, most forbidding and beautiful music during that period. This two-disc set brings together 16 tracks from the catalogue, all of them in drastically remixed versions; the results run the gamut from contemplative ambience to wanky prog-rock and dark, minimalist dub reggae. It’s been over five years since the mysterious Japanese experimental noise band the Boredoms have issued an album, and the appearance of Seadrum/House of Sun would appear to belie the rumors of their dissolution. Whatever the backstory, this is a very different sound from the electric guitar freakouts of previous releases, with just two long tracks – one a mixture of relentless drums with wordless vocals, harp, marimba, and piano, and the other a contemplative drone piece featuring noodling guitars and Indian instruments. This is just one little corner of the Japanese psychedelia scene, but it might open some eyes and ears if your library got a copy. (SA)

Ali Farka Toure is probably Mali’s most famous musician now, but the albums compiled here come from the early 80s when was not especially well-known even in his own country, as the title of this compilation refers to the fact that the original LPs had simple monochrome jackets, one of them red and the other green. The music here is all acoustic guitar, accompanied by simple percussion only, usually with just one vocal. It’s much more primitive than his recent recordings obviously, but it’s also, for want of a better description, more Arabic-sounding, even though the lyric sheet reveals that he’s singing in French. Essential for all collections of African music and for any listeners who want to hear some of the roots of contemporary African music. (SA) |
