Here the remarkable Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes shows himself to be not only in the very top tier of performers on his instrument, but also a gifted conductor. He brings warmth and wit to his interpretations of these two Mozart piano concerti, as does the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, and the recorded sound is excellent. (RA) |

This is only the second recording of Steve Reich's "Different Trains," a fascinating piece built on train sounds and conversational snippets with string accompaniment. The Kronos Quartet recorded the original version; this version is arranged for string orchestra. The disc also includes a strong orchestra version of Reich's Triple Quartet and his Four Sections. The playing and recorded sound are impeccable, and this disc should find a place in any collection that includes the original Kronos version of the title work. (RA) |

The title of this lovely recital disc (based on performances originally recorded in 1998 and 1999) may lead you to expect piano works by Peruvian composers, but it in fact focuses on Chopin waltzes and a couple of Haydn and Mozart sonatas. The title piece is one of several 20th-century compositions, an atonal rumination on the Beatles' "Eight Days a Week." Rangell is, as always, a supremely tasteful player; his delicate treatments of the Chopin and Mozart pieces are especially wonderful. (RA) |

Very little is known about the life of Johannes Prioris, who probably flourished around the time (and in the same region) as the Flemish composer Jean de Ockeghem. But these two masses -- a requiem and a parody mass -- reveal him as at least a worthy peer of the other Flemish masters, and the spare but warm quality of the singing and the acoustic on this recording is enchanting. Highly recommended to all early music collections. (RA) |

It looks like sort of a greatest-hits package, what with its focus on the choir itself and its program of short pieces by a wide array of composers (including Franck, Mendelssohn, Fauré, Schubert and Ireland) but Heavenly Voices is actually a new recording designed to showcase the high voices of this, one of the finest cathedral choirs in the world. The resulting album may not be essential to all research collections, but it is no less than musically stunning -- and at the very least, may lead the listener to reconsider the conventional wisdom concerning Franck's talents as a melodist. Although it includes two masses (one of them a requiem mass) written by Biber, this program is actually more of a requiem for him than a requiem by him. In addition to those two works, Paul McCreesh gathered together choral and instrumental works by Orlando di Lasso, Georg Muffat and others to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Biber's death. As always with this ensemble, the singing and playing are exquisite, as is the recording quality. Highly recommended. (RA) |

This is a collection of six works for violin and piano, written by four European composers of varying levels of notoriety in the U.S. Pärt's Fratres and Spiegel im Spiegel are both familiar works by now, but Schnittke's early Fugue for Solo Violin is an unexpected delight (as is his relatively simple and straightforward Suite in the Old Style). The Vasks and Kancheli pieces are a little bit more jagged, but not much. If you have students who need convincing that 20th-century music can be accessible and conventionally lovely, start here. Featuring flutist Mathieu Dufour and oboist Alex Klein, this light but charming program brings together four works by composers of the early Romantic era who have fallen into relative obscurity. Nothing here is likely to cause a wholesale reconsideration of Cimarosa (the best known of the three), Molique or Moscheles, but there's no denying the attractiveness of these concertos and concertante pieces, or the taste and expertise of the performances here. Recommended. (RA) |

The Calico Winds ensemble adopted the term "meritage" from the wine-making industry to describe this collection of pieces by 19th-century American composers, all of which demonstrate the degree to which indigenous American musical themes (rags, spirituals, folk music, Latin American sounds, etc.) had become integrated into the art music of the U.S. by the end of the 19th century. Elegantly played and nicely recorded, this program features works by Scott Joplin, Gregory Mason, Arthur Farwell, John Philip Sousa and others. (RA) |

The 22 songs on this program are all settings by male composers of texts written by female poets. As a unifiying theme it's interesting, though it makes for one or two slightly jarring transitions (from John Harbison to Schubert, or example). Soprano Georgine Resick's voice is lovely, but it could have been recorded more sympathetically. Nice overall, but maybe not essential. (RA) |

As one of the first exponents of what would come to be seen as a specifically French symphonic tradition, George Onslow deserves far greater recognition that he has had. These two rather startlingly Romantic symphonies (performed beautifully by the NDR Radiophilharmonie under the baton of Johannes Goritzki) show Onslow to be a master of the form and should lead listeners to delve further into his works list. Recommended to all classical collections. (RA) |

Recorded at the Dallas Theater Center, Kalita Humphreys Theater, to benefit the Sovereign Nations Preservation Project, Walela's live performance CD is a shining example of contemporary Native American vocal music. The vocals are breathtaking, with an etheral quality as the Walela weaves its stories of historical and contemporary Native American life. While not strictly traditional Native American in musical style, Walela's Coolidge sisters reflect their modern Cherokee heritage and this CD belongs in any collection of American ethnic music. In 1994, Christine Lavin assembled an array of folk-influenced musicians to record a disc of original songs loosely based on the theme of winter nights. The original album and subsequent tour were significant in the development of the current singer-songwriter movement. Philo’s expanded reissue brings this influential work back into print, and includes a number of intelligent, well-crafted selections by Lavin, Judy Collins, Bill Morrissey, Dave Van Ronk, Patty Larkin, and others. This CD contains some of the great classics of the early folk era. From Pete Seeger's emotional rendition of the Quaker spiritual "We shall overcome" to Doc Watson's version of the classic "John Henry" this CD is a beautiful picture of the early folk movement that began in the 1940s and evolved into the 1960's folk revival. This CD is a necessity for any collection of modern folk music as these truly are the classic recordings. (JM) |

Throughout his years as a member of Tackhead, the Sugar Hill Gang, Dub Syndicate and other electro-funk-reggae bands, guitarist Skip McDonald has always maintained an abiding interest in the blues, an interest that he has been exploring on his own for some time under the name Little Axe. Champagne & Grits is perhaps his most deeply bluesy album yet, though he doesn't turn his back on reggae and funk either. Dark, smoky and brilliant. (RA) |

Sam Bush has a long pedigree in the world of modern Bluegrass music and during the 1970s and 80s was a leader in the "newgrass" movement that married traditional bluegrass styles and themes with elements of rock, jazz and world music producing a wonderful hybrid of roots music. Sam is a consummate instrumentalist who musically surrounds himself with the royalty of his musical genre. This CD is an excellent marriage of technical expertise and traditional themes and will circulate often and appeal to a wide variety of musical tastes. (JM) |

Pianist John Sheridan returns with his fine rhythm section (bassist David Stone, drummer Tony DeNicola) to deliver another winning set of pre-1950 jazz standards. As always, his pianistic approach is a smart and bracing combination of light-fingered elegance and authoritative swing, and his tune choices are just as elegant and authoritative: "Poor Butterfly," "Wonder Why," "Ev'rything I Love," etc. Sheridan isn't breaking any new ground here, but he makes it lots of fun to revisit old territory. The Gotham Jazz Orchestra sounds phenomenal on this album of Mike Holober compositions, which was recorded in 1996 but took eight years to find its way from master tape to final mix and ultimate release. Holober is a gifted melodist, but where he really shines here is as a highly original arranger, bringing a unique approach to voicing and structure to these generally straight-ahead compositions. This disc documents a previously unreleased 1970 performance by the Basie orchestra in Budapest. The band is in exceptional form, playing with unbelievable energy (given the grueling touring schedule it had withstood during the previous months) and style, but the sound quality is unfortunately not all it perhaps could have been. It's listenable, and all the instruments are clearly audible, but there is some noticeable distortion on the source tape. Highlight tracks include two vocal turns by Mary Stallings. (RA) |

Gunther Schuller has made jazz-classical fusion work (sort of) in the past, but very few others have managed to do so. Add to that elite number the clarinetists Larry Combs and Eddie Daniels, whose latest album is not so much a mixture as an emulsion -- classical works by Ponchielli and Pleyel are interspersed with duo improvisations, and somehow the two genres complement each other very well. The playing is spectacular. Recommended to all jazz collections. (RA) |

The latest from composer, trumpeter and bandleader Paul Brody finds him continuing to work the experimental edges of klezmer music, incorporating elements of skronk, rock and even dubwise reggae into the mix, with thrilling results. One of the strangest and most enjoyable tracks is actually an extended reworking of the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts." (RA) |

Jazz guitarists tread a fine line: do you stick to one particular style and risk being boring, or do you try to play in lots of different styles and risk dilletantism? Josh Workman solves the problem by playing everything from Django-style gypsy jazz to straight-up bebop to Latin sambas and swing, and doing it all with jaw-dropping idiomatic and technical facility. Oh yeah, he also composes like a champ. It's just not fair... (RA) |

Originally released in 1984, this live performance includes such luminaries as John Zorn and William Parker. Brotzmann's output is huge (indeed, he appears to be a CD Hotlist regular), but kudos to Atavistic for re-issuing many of his long out of print works. Worth having in many libraries for the historical gathering of performers. (DC) |

Distilling nearly forty years of composer/saxophonist Shorter’s recordings down to two discs is a tough job, but this set succeeds in providing a representative sampling of the various facets of this master’s illustrious career. The anthology begins with a cut from Art Blakey, then covers Shorter’s solo career, his brilliant mid-60s work with Miles Davis, his years with Weather Report, and a few session dates with Joni Mitchell and others. Overall, it showcases his playing and unparalleled compositional skills, and serves as a fine overview of Shorter’s oeuvre.(GH) |

A really fine jazz flutist is always worth celebrating, and Holly Hofmann is among the finest. Her warm, swinging tone, her exquisite taste in sidemen (pianist Mike Wofford, bassist Peter Washington, drummer Victor Lewis) and her seemingly effortless facility in diverse jazz styles make this collection of ballads, sambas and blues a completely delightful listening experience. Highly recommended to all jazz collections. (RA) |

The famously quirky and charming cult film about the travails of a high school nerd in Preston, Idaho has provided the material for an equally quirky and charming soundtrack album. Like most, this one offers too many distracting snippets of film dialogue to function as a musical listening experience, but the music itself is great -- tracks by Bow Wow Wow, Yaz and Alphaville rub shoulders with more recent fare by Jamiroquai and, er, Canned Heat. And the cheesy, loungey, Farfisa-organ-y interludes by John Swihart aren't bad either. (RA) |

Like most DJ mix albums of house music, the latest from DJ Irene is more utilitarian than musically interesting; apart from a refreshing burst of junglism from Roni Size halfway through the program, there's not much to relieve the relentless thumpaholic consistency of these beats. But Irene's uniquely jubilant personality comes through loud and clear, and fans of the genre will not be disappointed. (RA) |

If your only acquaintance with Sixpence None the Richer's music comes via their ubiquitous (and frankly irresistible) hit singe "Kiss Me," then you might be surprised by both the sometimes quirky, sometimes almost jagged material in the band's earlier catalog and by the subtle but devout Christianity expressed in its lyrics. I know people who think they're too cool to confess that they like "Kiss Me," but even the hippest alt-snob will find something to like on this fine collection. (RA) |

They didn't invent rockabilly, but as far as most people born after 1970 are concerned, they might as well have. On this live DVD, Long Island's Stray Cats return to the Brixton, England stage where they had their first major success, and they revisit the hits that later brought them back to the States in triumph. They're a little older and chubbier, and bandleader Brian Setzer's guitar chops are more advanced, but otherwise it's like 1982 all over again. (A two-disc CD set is also available, for libraries that don't need the filmed concert version.) (RA) |

If you think CD HotList is fun, then you owe it to yourself to sit on the couch for a few hours with the newly updated edition of the Rolling Stone Album Guide. More comprehensive than Christgau's guides, more mainstream than the Trouser Press guides, the Rolling Stone guide still has that Baby Boomer flavor but has been nicely updated for the new century. Anyone selecting recordings for a pop music collection should have a copy of this book on her desk. (RA) |

Chris Thile is best known for his mandolin and vocal work in the progressive bluegrass trio "Nickel Creek." Deceiver is Thile's fifth solo work and an attempt to expand his musical horizons leading him to perform with over 25 different instruments on this CD alone. The music of "Deceiver" is lyrically intimate and melodic employing elements of jazz and rock to create a passionate collage of this artists musical vision. From the traditional folk stylings of "Jessamyn's Reel' to the rocking insistance of "The Believer," Deceiver" a prime example of the modern songwriter's art. (JM) |

The former Screaming Trees vocalist returns to his solo career after a stint with the Queens of the Stone Age and produces the record he was born to make. His previous solo work was more acoustic, with a folk/blues atmosphere, but this record displays a much harsher sound very well suited to his deep dark voice. Lyrically harrowing, but well worth the time for those who like their music edgy. (SA) |

It seems like Prince stages a comeback every few years, but now he's really back with an album that is as straightforward as we're likely to get from him at this point in his career. Musicology shows off his many strengths, especially on the seriously deep funk numbers, and the more melodic material acts as a pleasant breather between the workouts. Don't let memories of his past achievements affect your appreciation of this excellent work. (SA) |

Rhino Records continues to prove its unparalleled value to libraries with this handy four-disc set of classic "alternative" rock from the 1980s. Featuring well-chosen tracks by such eminences of the period as X, the Church, Joy Division and the Go-Betweens, it also pluck gems from such lesser-known entities as the Lyres and Green on Red, offering a nice cross-section of punk, postpunk, cowpunk, new wave, electropop and ska. The packaging is up to the label's usually high standards, and the extensive accompanying booklet is both fun and informative. Highly recommended to all pop music collections. (RA) |

Ministry did its best to be one of the most abrasive and experimental of the industrial bands that emerged in the mid-to-late 1980s, but sometimes things got too weird even for the Ministry brand. When that happened, its members recorded under names like Pailhead, Acid Horse, PTP and 1000 Homo DJs. This disc collects rare and out-of-print singles and EPs released under those names, and any library with a collecting interest in pop music history should consider acquiring it (along with a companion volume of early Ministry B-sides and remixes titled Early Trax [RCD 10686]). Drummer Alexander has been part of many of New York's Radical Jewish music ensembles, including Hasidic New Wave and Klezmatics. And while this CD has many of the usual suspects (most of whom have released their own CDs on the Tzadik label), Alexander proves himself a truly accomplished composer and leader. This has as much tunefulness as any good klezmer collection, but it takes it (along with punk, jazz and so much more) to a new, exciting place. For those libraries that wonder if this segment of Tzadik's releases is really growing, the answer is a definite yes. (DC) |

There are many good historical overviews of reggae music available right now, but few that focus as carefully and productively as this one on what many consider the music's most fertile period: 1960 (when ska first emerged) to 1975 (the high point of the "roots-and-culture") period. Not many reggae labels have vaults as deep as Trojan's, and in this case they yield classic tracks from the likes of Stranger Cole, Desmond Dekker, Gregory Isaacs, the Heptones, Junior Byles and many more. The packaging is top-notch, and the track-by-track notes are very handy. Essential. (RA) |

The narcocorrido is a subgenre of the Mexican narrative ballad known as the corrido; specifically, it celebrates the exploits of drug traffickers. Questions about whether such exploits ought to be celebrated notwithstanding, this album is a valuable document of an important strand in the complex fabric of Mexican music in the early 20th century, and can be recommended to all libraries with a collecting interest in the region. The liner notes alone are worth the price of the disc. (RA) |

Granted, the packaging is inexcusably cutesy (the liner notes include recipes) and the title is just plain goofy, but this is actually a very fun and interesting collection of modern Indian pop music, much of it bearing a cool, European and urban flavor rather than the emotional Bollywood fare that the prevailing Western stereotypes of modern Indian music might lead one to expect. Trilok Gurtu, Tabla Beat Science and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan are names that most Westerners might recognize; the others will come as something of a revelation. Very nice. (RA) |

This is the second of two volumes of classic recordings by the late Tejano music master Isidro "El Indo" Lopez. All of these songs were recorded between 1954 and 1964, and for the most part the songs are great and the sound quality is surprisingly high. There are some clunkers (notably a plodding rendition of Pedro Flores' "Amor Perdido"), so those interested may want to start with the first volume, but those libraries that have experienced high demand for that title should probably pick up this one as well. It's a tough call whether to categorize Dierdre Dubois' solo debut as Rock/Pop or World/Ethnic, but I've put it under the latter so as to increase the likelihood that it will be recognized by fans of her previous group, the worldbeat visionaries known as Ekova. You'll hear a number of different ethno influences here, but the album focuses on her wonderful voice and her excellent taste in slightly strange, funkily twisted electronic beats and textures. There aren't tons of catchy melodies here, but somehow the songs come across as hooky and engrossing anyway. Recommended. (RA) |
