Eighth Blackbird is another in the slowly growing list of edgy young chamber ensembles dedicated to bringing new (or at least newer) music to broad audiences. Here they present compelling works by the young Daniel Kellogg (a creation-scene tone poem called Divinum Mysterium) and the venerable George Crumb (the decidedly more naturalistic Vox Balaenae). The fast ones are fun, but this album achieves transcendance on quiet, heartbroken fare like "The Maid of Bunclody" and the unaccompanied "Yellow Bittern." Nothing unusual or even especially noteworthy here, just lots of good, traditional Irish music. Fiddler Oisin Mac Diarmada is the low-key star of these performances, especially when he's not singing (which is most of the time, luckily). Very nice, if not absolutely essential. (RA) |
