The mid-century recordings collected on this disc were originally issued on LP and never before available on CD, offer an enjoyable look at some of Mozart's less frequently-recorded piano repertoire. The sound quality is quite good, and the performances are excellent. Recommended. (RA) |

The young violinist and pianist Christian Tetzlaff and Lars Vogt recorded this program of Brahms violin sonatas at the 2002 Spannungen Festival in Heimbach, Germany. The live setting seems to bring out the passion in both players, but their interpretations are sensitive and tasteful as well. The sound quality is excellent. If your collection already owns these works in multiple recordings, this one may not be essential, but it can be confidently recommended wherever collections are in need. (RA) |

Eighth Blackbird is another in the slowly growing list of edgy young chamber ensembles dedicated to bringing new (or at least newer) music to broad audiences. Here they present compelling works by the young Daniel Kellogg (a creation-scene tone poem called Divinum Mysterium) and the venerable George Crumb (the decidedly more naturalistic Vox Balaenae). Both are very nicely played and well recorded. That's Chanticleer singing the opening plainchant on the Kellogg piece, by the way. (RA) |

This is the first in what should be a very rewarding series of recordings of Telemann's violin concertos led by one of classical music's finest Telemann interpreters. The concerto was Telemann's natural medium, and these are among his most enjoyable works. The recording quality, as usual with this label, is excellent. Highly recommended. (RA) |

Collections with an interest in "historically informed" performance practice will want a copy of this fine two-disc set, on which the musicians use modern instruments but baroque or classical-style bows and playing style. Gallois' flute is a hybrid instrument with old and new features. The music itself is no afterthought: the pieces are charming and the performances excellent. (RA) |

This budget-priced twofer brings together two late-1960s recordings by the fine Beethoven interpreter John Ogdon (with three 1996 by Emil Gilels to round out the set). These are not Beethoven's most consequential piano compositions, by any means, but they are endlessly enjoyable and instructive. Performances and recording quality are both top-notch. (RA) |

These are gorgeous and beautifully-recorded renderings of lute music by one of the most criminally neglected French composers of the early baroque period. | Comments: |
|
By all rights, a Celtic musical group should not be hailing from Orange County California, but that's exactly where the Fenians have developed their sound since 1990. Every Day's a Hooley is a fresh, often jazzy intrepretation of traditional Irish music, popular covers with some originals and unique instrumentation for the genre added for effect. As an example, the use of a saxaphone on Ralph McTell's "From Clare to Here" adds new depth to a well known song of loneliness of the immigrant. Historical songs include "Rebel Sons of Erin" which dates to the American Civil War. The mix of musical styles and fresh approach of the Fenians has resulted in a unique musical offering that belongs in any collection of modern Celtic music. (JM) |

Floyd and Lloyd Armstrong may not have been as influential as the Monroe Brothers or the Blue Sky Boys, but they were masters of the "brother duet" mandolin-and-guitar format, and their material has stood the test of time quite well. This collection includes recordings from 1948 and from 1979 -- and if anything, their voices sound better on the later stuff. (RA) |

On this warm and winning album, saxophonist Bobby Watson reconstitutes the quintet he led in the 1990s and successfully rekindles the fire that typified their joyfully virtuosic performances during that period. Sticking to a straight-ahead postbop style, the group delivers a nicely crafted program of originals and standards that includes a gorgeous rendition of Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love," among other gems. Strongly recommended to all jazz collections. (RA) |

Pianist Matthew Shipp has it all figured out: the way you get people to open up their ears to new sounds is by wedding them to old sounds. Or not-so-old sounds, as long as they're funky and accessible. Hence the bracing mixture of slamming breakbeats and outre avant-jazzism on this fine new album. No jazz collection should be without at least a handful of Shipp recordings, and this one is a good place to start. (RA) |

The Great Jazz trio was formed in 1976 by pianist Hank Jones, his brother Elvin (on drums) and bassist Ron Carter. The bass chair turned out to be a revolving door, and on this session it's occupied by the fine Richard Davis. This is an excellent session of standards, made notable mainly by the fact that it was Elvin Jones' final recording. Recommended. (RA) |

A new Steve Swallow album is always an event worth noting, and this one is no exception. With instrumentation inspired by Igor Stravinsky's A Soldier's Tale, saxophonist Ohad Talmor arranged some of Swallow's more obscure compositions and invited the composer to sit in on bass. The result is maybe a bit dry, but always intellectually interesting. If your collection supports coursework in arranging, it should definitely include this disc. (RA) |

Singer Nancy Wilson teams up with pianist George Shearing, jazz harmonica legend Toots Thielemans and a shifting array of supporting musicians on this utterly charming set of songs that are mostly outside the canon of jazz standards. From the soft, intimate arrangement of "An Older Man Is Like an Elegant Wine" to the robust big-band setting of "Day In, Day Out" (okay, there are a few standards), Wilson delivers the good as she always has, with grace and intelligence. Saxophonist Scott Robinson served as Jazz Ambassador for the U.S. State Department in the early 1990s, and during that time began to reflect on the fact that Louis Robinson is better known for his trumpet playing than his compositions. This album is an attempt to correct the balance by presenting 14 of Armstrong's best pieces, and it makes a compelling argument for Robinson's position. Recommended for all jazz collections. (RA) |

On this album, flutist Jamie Baum leads a nimble septet on an exciting and challenging program of original compositions that explore occasionally difficult harmonic territory but never dissolve into forbidding atonality or arrhythmic skronk. Baum herself is a team player almost to a fault, and the album might have benefited from a stronger solo presence on her part, but overall it will make a very solid contribution to any jazz collection. Originally issued in 1985 on the tiny Landmark label, this is one of the most accessible and lovely Kronos Quartet albums. Critics at the time had some valid points -- Kronos does not swing particularly convincingly -- but their insight into the harmony and general feel of Bill Evans' music gives this disc a warm, shimmering beauty that is immediately engrossing. A must for any jazz collection. (See also the entry for Monk Suite.) (RA) |

You can see why the critics panned this collection of Thelonious Monk compositions arranged for string quartet -- as jazz, it's not very convincing. But as quirky modern classical music, it's quite a bit of fun, and as an interesting experiment in jazz-classical fusion it should be of interest to any collection supporting a jazz curriculum. Grant Olney is a strange, dreamy singer-songwriter from Texas, whose full-length debut comes across as a weird sort of mix between Van Morrison and Robert Earl Keen. He's not much of a singer and his songs are almost completely bereft of hooks, but they grab onto you and hold on nonetheless. How does he do that? (RA) |

Listen to a couple of tracks on this album and it will come as no surprise that the members of the California Guitar Trio met at one of Robert Fripp's workshops -- but that's a good thing! Playing mostly acoustic guitars, these guys work together to weave lovely and intriguing compositions that are instantly accessible and yet reward close listening. Recommended. (RA) |

Here's how it works for music critics: you compare Kings of Convenience to Simon & Garfunkel, and their fans get mad. 'Nuff said. The fact is, though, that this quiet, well-crafted modern acoustic pop music attracts in much the same way as S&G's did, and that's not a bad thing at all. Expect demand. (RA) |

Back in the 1930s, a certain subset of African American churches began using electric steel guitar to lead Sunday worship music; there are now dozens of such churches, and this excellent documentary offers historical background as well as lots of footage of the current state of the art. Musically thrilling and academic fascinating, this DVD is an essential purchase for any collection supporting ethnomusicology or African American studies. (RA) |

Increase your library's indie-cred with the latest from Badly Drawn Boy, a bearded alt-retro favorite (no, it's not your imagination -- "Summertime in Wintertime" really does sound like vintage Jethro Tull) who is quickly insinuating himself into the alt-rock mainstream (wait, wasn't that supposed to be a contradiction in terms?). By turns soft and aggressive, his latest is an impressive entry in an already pretty noteworthy catalog. (RA) |

Impressionistic, sometimes downright contemplative alt-rock from a DC-based band that knows some secret handshakes ("The Boy with the Durutti Column") and isn't afraid to use them. There are some moments of surprising beauty here; this album is guaranteed to be a hit among mopey freshman boys. (RA) |

Because bassist and producer Bill Laswell's Axiom label is responsible both for some of the most wonderful and some of the most drop-dead boring albums in the commercial marketplace, a collection of new remixes drawn from the recent catalog is the perfect place to start an exploration of his ambient-funk-dub-worldbeat universe. The general mood is mystical and dark, as always, but with lots of complex beats and moments of soaring melodic beauty as well (mainly courtesy of the brilliant Ethiopian singer Gigi Shibabaw). The woman who gave us "Hound Dog" is captured in this 1966 recording leading Muddy Waters' band (including Otis Spann on piano, James Cotton on harmonica and Muddy himself on guitar) through a blistering set of Chicago blues; this reissue includes seven previously-unreleased bonus cuts taken from the same recording session. They shouldn't have let her play drums on "Everything's Gonna Be Alright," but otherwise this is a thrilling piece of blues history. Essential. (RA) |

Traditionalists beware: if you're looking for spare, unadorned griot music from Mali, then you've come to the wrong place. But if you like your African roots music nicely spiked with electronic beats and textures, then Issa Bagayogo is your guy. (And the fact is, electronic elements are becoming more and more a part of African tradition, so let's all just relax about that, okay?) (RA) |

Lots of fine Irish musicians play on this wonderful collection of traditional songs, but all of them fade wisely into the background behind singer Sean Doyle and his son, guitarist and producer John Doyle. The fast ones are fun, but this album achieves transcendance on quiet, heartbroken fare like "The Maid of Bunclody" and the unaccompanied "Yellow Bittern." Sean Doyle is a living treasure, and so is this album. (RA) |

If, cruelly, your library were forced to choose only one reggae album for its collection, you could do much, much worse than this generous collection of classic singles from Jamaica's legendary Channel One studio. With selections from the Mighty Diamonds, Barrington Levy, Junior Byles, Leroy Smart and many others, this set offers an excellent overview of the roots and early dancehall periods. (RA) |

Legend remains the one essential Bob Marley best-of collection, and should have a place in any library collection that doesn't include his individual albums. This deluxe reissue set includes a second disc of (mostly disappointing remixes) as well as a DVD that includes some charming early music videos and, even better, the brilliant Time Will Tell biopic. The DVD alone is worth the price. (RA) |

Nothing unusual or even especially noteworthy here, just lots of good, traditional Irish music. Fiddler Oisin Mac Diarmada is the low-key star of these performances, especially when he's not singing (which is most of the time, luckily). Very nice, if not absolutely essential. (RA) |
