Violinist Sarah Chang wisely resists the temptation to over-emote on these masterpieces of French romanticism, and instead offers powerful yet restrained interpretations. Lars Vogt's piano accompaniment is similarly tasteful and expert. Highly recommended. (RA) |

This is the first time Berlioz' song cycle (intended for tenor or mezzo-soprano) has been recorded by a countertenor, and Daniels makes a powerful argument for this unusual approach. The program also includes songs by Faure and Ravel. Highly recommended. (RA) |

These recordings were originally issued as individual discs (two quartets each) between 1996 and 1998; now a library can acquire all of Cherubini's very fine string quartet output in equally fine period-instrument performances in a single, mid-priced three-disc set. Hausmusik is one of England's best period-instrument ensembles, and this set is very highly recommended to all classical collections. (RA) |

People will call this "minimalist" and cite LaMonte Young and Philip Glass, but if you listen to the string writing and the celesta, you'll realize that the most obvious referent here is Harold Budd (though Adams is a much more elegant and sophisticated composer than Budd -- and, frankly, than Young). Gorgeous. (RA) |

On this collection of violin fantasias, Jennifer Koh shows an unusually impressive ability to move gracefully from the lyrical charm of Schubert and Schumann to the spikier territory of Schoenberg and then the abstract impressionism of Ornette Coleman. She is ably supported on the first three selections by pianist Reiko Uchida. Very nice indeed. (RA) |

Lucy Kaplansky is one of the leading female singer/songwriters of modern American folk music. On her latest album, her lyric-driven music speaks to a variety of themes ranging from living in New York and the tragedy of 9/11 to the experience of new step-motherhood. Her topical approach makes this album relevant to American culture studies and songwriting as well as modern American folk music. (JM) |

This re-mastering of many traditional bluegrass songs by less well-known artists provides a keen insight to the unvarnished sound that this unique form of American music originally offered during the 1960s. Following up on the success of their Yo, Miles! collaboration of 1998, guitarist Henry Kaiser and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith again interpret Miles Davis compositions (and a couple of Smith originals) from Davi's fusion period. "Fountain of Youth" is an apt title for the latest album from the 79-year-old drummer Roy Haynes, a man who was present at the birth of bebop and remains a powerful and innovative force in the jazz world. "Worldbeat" is such an inadequate term -- it conjures up aural images of shallow ethnic appropriations set to cheesy club beats. Banco de Gaia offers something else entirely: solid dance music with a kaleidoscopic variety of stylistic and melodic influences. The emphasis is always solidly on the "dance" part. (RA) |

This music is hard to describe, let alone categorize: imagine the illegitimate musical child of Tom Waits and Edith Piaf, or a cross between a spy-movie soundtrack and Scottish mouth music as remixed by Edgard Varese. Then imagine the result as something very pretty and gentle, almost comforting. Crazy, no? (RA) |

Here's more inspired mayhem from Simon Emmerson et al., a crew who believe that Celtic music is best served on a bed of Afro-European electronica. Disc 1 is a bunch of remixes of previously-released ACSS materials; disc 2 is a DVD with several music videos and footage from the 2001 WOMAD festival. (RA) |

The best album yet from one of alt-rock's most overlooked bands. As always, Jay Clifford's unique voice and surprising vocal agility provide some of the album's most exciting moments. Very highly recommended to all pop music collections. (RA) |

Nothing on this album changes my opinion that the best thing the Legendary Pink Dots have ever produced is bass player Ryan Moore (who records on his own under the name Twilight Circus Sound System), but this is perfectly fine experimental British rock. "In Sickness and in Health" and the sonically quirky "For Sale" are especially nice. (RA) |

The packaging is a little perverse -- it's an untitled two-disc split, and the two discs are both 25-minute-long EPs -- but the content is wonderful. The two bands offer slightly different takes on dreamy, organic alt-rock; Speed Not Steel gets the prize for hooks and harmonies. (RA) |

This is not, strictly speaking, a fado album -- nor is it, strictly speaking, a collection of music by Carlos Paredes. But it is an album of poems set to Paredes' music sung in a very fado-esque style by Misia, a Portuguese chanteuse. And it's very lovely. Libraries that have a collecting interest in either fado or Paredes should definitely acquire. (RA) |

Sweet and lovely bossa nova from one of Brazil's most winning singers. There's not much electronic elaboration going on here, and no funky remixes -- just straight-ahead bossa and lots of it. Very, very nice. (RA) |

There are lots of bands out there experimenting with various fusions of Celtic tradition and other musical styles, but few have succeeded as well as this one at a truly seamless and consistently satisfying blend. Don't be scared by the cello and trumpet. (RA) |

This gorgeous album of Brazilian jazz-pop was originally self-released by the artist in 2001, and is just now getting a concentrated publicity push. Holz' voice is soft and gorgeous, as are his songs, and the large cast of supporting musicians provide lovely renderings of his compositions. It's available via CDBaby. (RA) |

Miriam Makeba hardly needs an introduction, nor should most librarians need to be told that a new Makeba album is a must-buy. On this one she ranges far and wide for her material, singing songs from all Brazil, France, England and all over Africa. Her voice is as strong and rich as ever. (RA) |
