It's not so much that we needed yet another recording of this much-recorded song cycle. It's that we needed a version by Ian Bostridge, who is perhaps the most exciting young tenor on the market today and who delivers these hoary lieder as if he were discovering them for the first time. The fact that he's accompanied by the equally exciting young pianist Leif Ove Andsnes doesn't hurt, either. This one is recommended no matter how many other versions your collection holds. (RA) |

This fine collection of polychoral religious works from 17th-century Naples showcases the work of two relatively obscure Neapolitan composers, Francesco Provenzale and Cristofaro Caresana. A nine-voice motet, a mass, and an allegorical "dialogue for the Passion" are presented along with a brief instrumental work of Caresana. Good luck finding any other version of this collection of sacred madrigals from Leipzig's foremost pre-Bach composer (Cantus Colln's version on Deutsche Harmonia Mundi is long out of print). Even if you could find another, though, it would have to go a long way to outdo this wonderful interpretation by Manfred Cordes' Weser-Renaissance, whose sound is sweet and rich but never heavy, and who were splendidly recorded in the Radio Bremen studio. This brief, midpriced disc presents the celebrated composer John Adams' memorial composition in honor of those who died in the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center. As fun as it would be to have an album of punked-up versions of standard Christmas songs, that's not what we've got here; instead, A Santa Clause consists mainly of seasonally-themed original songs by such artists as Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, New Found Glory and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. A few adaptations of traditional favorites are thrown in, of course (and Matchbox Romance's take on "I'll be Home for Christmas" is pretty fun), but the best tracks are the new ones. Tim and Neil Finn were the founders and leaders of Split Enz back in the early 1980s, and Neil was the leader of Crowded House in the late 80s and 1990s. When Neil is left to his own devices the results are almost unbearably tuneful and bittersweet; when the two work together their harmonies are usually complex and their melodies maybe just a bit dry, but this album finds them combining their twin skillsets beautifully -- and the results are much more satisfying than their previous duo outing was.
